Q. Does the 2006 UIGEA law make it illegal for me to play poker within the US?
A. The UIGEA deals more with United States financial instiutions and their processing of gambling transactions, not the players themselves. After the UIGEA was passed, online poker rooms introduced new payment processors to aid American players in their quest to play online poker legally. Q. What happens if a poker rooms closes its business to US poker players?
A. When poker rooms like Party Poker closed their doors to American players, the players' accounts were frozen until the whole mess was sorted out, then their funds were returned. Most of the sites that pulled out of the U.S. market were publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange, and withdrew to avoid backlash from the U.S. government. The sites that remained open did so because they are privately held companies outside of U.S. jurisdiction, where Americans can play legally and worry free!
